Amazon introduces updated Kindle Paperwhite eBook Reader

Rick Otto

Amazon surprised today by announcing their next generation Kindle Paperwhite eBook Reader.

The new Paperwhite has several updated specs.  These include a new display technology that allows for a higher contrast.  It also has a next generation built-in light that allows for the best reading experience day or night.  The processor is updated to be 25% faster.  With the new processor an ebook will open faster and page turns are faster.  The device has a 6" Paperwhite display that displays at 212 ppi and uses 16-level gray scale.  It measures 6.7" x 4.6" x 0.36" and weighs 7.3 ounces.  It has 2 GB of internal memory with 1.25 GB available for user content providing the ability to store 1,100 books.  It lasts up to eight weeks on a single charge, based on reading for 30 minutes per day with wireless off.  It can be fully charged in 4 hours.  It offers Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n

There's also new features added to the new Paperwhite.  One of these features is called Page Flip.  Page Flip allows you to skim an ebook page-by-page and it gives you the ability to skip through chapters without losing your place.  Like many other things these days the new Paperwhite is becoming more social.  Amazon purchased Goodreads, a social network for book readers, this year.  Goodreads allows users to connect with other book readers.  You are able to connect with readers with similar interests, share recommendations, and also both read and post reviews from your connections and others.  Goodread users often get great book recommendations from their connections.  I believe we'll see Goodreads integrated into the rest of the Kindle line and also the Kindle apps in the near future.  There's also now a Vocabulary builder that can compile words that you look up in the dictionary into flashcards.  There's even a feature called Kindle FreeTime that parents can use as a way to encourage and reward their kids' reading.

The new Paperwhite is now up for preorder on Amazon.  Prices start from $119 for the version with offers and $139 for the version without offers.
